We’re taking a step back into yesteryear at a beautiful new old property. In fact, this is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state of North Carolina. Welcome to The NuWray.
Here in the quaint town of Burnsville, North Carolina on the beautiful town square stands a property that first opened its doors in 1833. It was opened by the Wray family, and for 4 generations they welcomed guests to the mountains. Today after a 3 year renovation the NuWray Hotel is open for business.
The hotel features 26 beautifully appointed rooms with a simple elegance that provides all the modern comforts, while at the same time echoing that historic tradition that dates back nearly 300 years.
So, 1833. That’s a long time ago! In 1833 there were 24 states. Queen Victoria was on the throne across the pond. And here in the frontier of Burnsville this little hotel was welcoming folks to their brand new town.
Elements of that historic past have been preserved here at the NuWray. Including sections of the original building’s details currently on display. And as fascinating as that past is – it’s what’s brand new that’s really exciting.
During the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the hotel became a main hub for information on the Town Square. They housed rescue workers and displaced families, and served free community meals in coordination with World Central Kitchen. And speaking of kitchens.
Carriage House Sundries here on the property is a great place to have one heck of a good time. It’s a cafe and bakery by day, and a bar and lounge by night.
This is a great spot to check out whether you’re staying on property or just popping in. They’re even serving up pastries from Maples Bakery – giving the Micaville favorite new life and a new location after the hurricane. It’s all part of the small town spirit, Southern charm, and modern comfort that really encapsulates the true spirit of the NuWray Hotel.
