We’re heading up into the mountains for a truly unique outdoor experience. Now, we’ve been on a lot of hikes with a lot of different friends. But we’ve never experienced hiking with a friend like this before.
Yep, we’re hiking with llamas. Because we’re visiting Earthshine Lodge. This place opened around 30 years ago with the mission of connecting people with the outdoors. And today, their llama hike is one of the many ways that they get people out to experience the beauty of nature.
When you’re here you can learn about their famous llamas’ interesting histories and how to safely handle the animals before heading out on your hike.
The llama hike lasts about an hour and a half as you traverse the approximately one mile private trail up to their gorgeous mountain top destination. The 76-acre property is perfectly located near Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, Nantahala National Forest, and Dupont State Forest – all personal favorites that offer outstanding opportunities for outdoor adventure.
And when the day is done and your adventuring is on pause until tomorrow these amazing accommodations await – with two distinct options to choose from.
The main lodge was constructed using wood harvested from the property. It features 8 rooms, stone fireplaces, and all the elements of a rustic mountain lodge with all the comforts of home.
The original farmhouse on the property, now called the Sunrise Cottage, was built in the first part of the century and is now separated into three unique units, each with a separate entrance.
But you don’t have to stay here to participate in the activities – though we highly recommend you do. In addition to the llama hikes they also offer blacksmithing and brews where you can come out and learn the art of blacksmithing, then chill out with a cold one watching the world go by.
Earthshine Lodge is peaceful, unexpected, and fun. Whether you’re trekking up a trail with your new llama buddy or relaxing on the deck with your favorite craft beverage it’s a great place to enjoy an escape from the everyday.
