Ingles Markets is sending Chris Bainbridge on a road trip to explore the Carolinas and find all the adventures they offer. So far, he’s seen some cool, fun, and affordable places. But he’s not done yet. His next destination takes him to Brevard, NC.
DuPont State Recreational Forest is an outdoor paradise known for its waterfalls. It’s seen record numbers of visitors, even during the pandemic. While spectacular waterfalls are their main attraction, there’s more to this place than meets the eye. Bainbridge shares the top five secrets of DuPont.
Secret #5: Lake Julia
In the heart of the forest lies the largest and most remote lake in DuPont. Lake Julia is 99 acres of serene mountain splendor. It’s the least visited area, but it’s worth the trip if you need an escape from everyday life. If you’re looking for a quiet place to clear your mind, Lake Julia may be the spot for you.
Secret #4: The Airstrip
As you continue through the tunnels of tree-covered trails, you’ll run into something unexpected. The airstrip of DuPont, created by the owner of two camps in the 1970s, is a 28-hundred-foot strip of asphalt. The DuPont company also used this site for its executives. Not to mention the views from up there are breathtaking.
Secret #3: Fawn Lake
Fawn Lake is an intimate destination with fan-favorite grotto areas down a nearly hidden trail by the beautiful gazebo. It’s a short, easy walk from the Fawn Lake access area. During the summer months, the lake echoes with the sounds of splashing and laughter.
Secret #2: DuPont Kanteen
Hiking is fun, but it’s also a workout. When you need a break or reward from your day on the trails, stop by DuPont Kanteen. Their ice cream is some of Bainbridge’s favorite. Try their craft beer, delicious food, and tasty yurts too.
Secret #1: Wintergreen Falls
Waterfalls may be DuPont’s main attraction, but there is one particular waterfall that is rarely visited. Getting there requires hiking one of Bainbridge’s favorite trails in the entire forest. Enormous boulders sprinkle the wooded terrain like something out of a Tolkien novel, eventually leading you to the Wintergreen Falls. Unlike its Little River cousins, the Grassy Creek formed the Wintergreen Falls. You’ll also notice it’s devoid of crazy crowds that dominate that main waterfall corridor.
DuPont is the place to be for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and outdoor enthusiasts. Enjoy the trails, pack out what you pack in, and explore the hidden secrets of DuPont State Recreational Forest. This is a weekend getaway you don’t want to miss.
