We’re riding the rails on one of the most famous and most traveled tracks in the country. We’re in Bryson City. And this is the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.
Unlike many other towns and cities in Western North Carolina, Bryson City was spared the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene. And while Ingles is currently all hands on deck serving the folks of those impacted areas, they also know that tourism is a vital part of mountain economies.
So, to keep those wheels of small towns turning – we’re here to let you know that local business is getting back on track in some areas of the mountains. And we’re inviting you to come along for the ride.
Here you have several trips to choose from – each winding their way through gorgeous Smoky Mountain scenery. There’s the Tuckasegee River excursion that chugs its way to the beautiful town of Dillsboro. And our trip today… experiencing the Nantahala Gorge.
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has a fleet of trains including steam and diesel locomotives. And in addition to the regular rides that run throughout the year, several themed events are hugely popular during certain seasons – including The Polar Express, Spirits on the Rail, and their Moonshine Experience.
And of course on The Ingles Open Road you know we’re gonna find the food. Whether you’re in the open air of one of the box cars or in one of the dining cars, the options here are really tasty.
The Nantahala Gorge excursion features a 1-hour layover at another Ingles Open Road favorite, Nantahala Outdoor Center. While this place is famous for whitewater, ziplining, and more – it’s also a great spot to explore before hopping the train back to Bryson City.
And when you do arrive back at the station you have to make sure and check out the Smoky Mountains train museum. Admission is free with your train ticket, and it’s a ton of fun to explore.
Whether you’re experiencing the world in miniature marveling at the intricate trains in the museum… or having a larger than life experience thundering along through gorgeous countryside… there is something for everyone when you visit the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.
