We’re exploring the natural world, inside the lovely climate controlled confines of the expansive Schiele Museum of Natural History here in Gastonia. If you have an affinity for the final frontier, the American frontier, or just frontiers in general, then this is the place for you.
Founded by Bud and Lily Schiele in 1961, The Schiele Museum of Natural History is committed to providing visitors with experiences that inspire curiosity about science and the natural world. This place has dinosaur fossils, wildlife displays, gems and minerals, historical artifacts, and so much more.
Including one of the largest planetariums in North Carolina. The James H. Lynn Planetarium features a fully digital projection system that surrounds you with a domed, 360-degree screen, as you’re immersed in the wonders of the universe and beyond.
Other permanent exhibits at the museum include The Hall of North American Habitats, The Hall of North American Wildlife, The Hall of North Carolina Natural History, and a whole haul of other stuff. As you wander the halls you are treated to fun and interactive interpretations of our natural world. Bringing science and history to life in interesting and engaging ways.
A number of traveling exhibits also frequent the museum. Right now you can take a dino-tour through the Mesozoic Era and walk amongst full-bodied models of these giants that roamed the earth a hundred million years ago.
These dinosaurs are a blast and you can learn a lot about the world they lived in as you explore this new habitat. You can also experience Cats Untamed; Friend Not Foe: Snakes of the Carolinas; and have a good time at the Block Party.
In addition to winding your way through the halls of the museum more offerings await outside. There’s the nature trail, the memorial wildlife garden, the farm, and even a stone age heritage site.
It’s a ton of fun to explore nature and take in these engaging exhibits. But whether you’re taking it all in indoors or outdoors – there is plenty to entertain at the Schiele Museum of Natural History.
