Have you ever noticed how a smell can take you right back to a moment in time? Smells like fresh cut lumber, a newly mowed lawn, or honeysuckle in the heat of summer trigger great memories of childhood. Today’s destination is filled with one of those heavenly aromas. Welcome to Axe and Awl Leatherworks.
Can you remember that smell? If you ever broke in a baseball glove it takes you right back. Here at Axe & Awl they offer a hands-on opportunity to craft some amazing and useful items you can cherish for yourself or share as a gift with friends and family.
Located in the mountain town of Waynesville, North Carolina, Axe and Awl is the vision of husband and wife duo Spencer and Courtney. These former first responders – Spencer a firefighter and Courtney a paramedic – are now sharing their wares with a nationwide customer base from right here on Depot Street.
Not coincidentally a big part of that customer base today are first responders. Radio straps, suspenders, utility belts, and accessories are custom-designed to stand up in the field.
But you don’t have to be a firefighter or a paramedic to enjoy these fine products, and not only that – they’ll even teach you how to make your own.
You can attend one of their leathercraft workshops to learn and create while gaining an appreciation for this centuries-old artform. You can belly up to the Belt Bar for a custom creation, or the Bevel Bar for a craft cocktail.
There is great opportunity and challenge that comes with learning something new and creating something from raw materials. And this place offers an amazing opportunity to do just that.
Here in this historic building you’re able to explore a multitude of local wares. And if you can’t make it to Waynesville, their website offers a chance to peruse their custom creations from the comfort of your own home. But we highly recommend you hop in the car and set your GPS to the Smokey Mountain town of Waynesville and Axe and Awl Leatherworks.
